Today we talk with Monica of MonicaKStarDolls who wears so many hats at The Repaint Society, it's a miracle she has time to chat! As long time
co-organizer of TRS shows, it's always a treat to get her insight from behind the curtain.
How many shows have you been involved with?
I have been participating since our first show, Dead Dolls Walking, along with Laurie Leigh, Susan Hook, Lisa Ramsammy and Laurie
Everton.
How long does a TRS project generally take for
you?
I always start the minute the theme and character is assigned and finish as soon as possible, around 2 months. I have many tasks as part of the promotion team: creating posters, sneak peeks, and videos along with managing the Facebook page so I want my doll to be ready by the
time everybody else is sending the first sneak peeks. I am also constantly chatting with everyone else, trying to help as much as I can locating doll sources, props, materials, etc.
What's the hardest/best thing about participating?
The hardest part would be that not everyone works at the same pace or
is used to working in a tight schedule. It's normal for artists to be
carefree spirits and adhering to time lines for many of us is
exhausting. I get to be part of the society police, pushing everybody
to finish on time. That is the less fun part.
The best part for sure is the sharing of knowledge and experience. Our
fans do not know but we are chatting 24-7. With artists from America,
Australia, and Europe, there is somebody online at all times.
What's your personal favorite TRS achievement?
My personal favorite is my Evil Queen from the Once Upon a Time
project. Costume wise, it would be Margaery Tyrell from the Game of
Thrones project. The spiky embroidery and rose application took
forever.
What's the most expensive element you've incorporated?
My Evil Queen came with a miniature sterling silver box, circa 1950
and made in Spain. A real beauty!
What excites you most about this show?
To see what all the other artists are going to choose as twists to
shape their fairy tale creations.
Why did you pick your character?
Honestly, because I do great hair and my character will be immediately
recognized by her hairstyle.
How did you decide your concept?
Since Arendelle appears to be located in Norway/Viking Country, it
seems a natural thing to relate Queen Elsa and her Viking ancestry.
What will be your greatest challenge in creating her?
Making Elsa fierce but keeping her ethereal and beautiful.
Thanks so much for making time for us, Monica! We all look forward to
your Queen Elsa!
