Laurie Everton of The Barbie Canvas is a repainter with an old rocker's soul. Today we find out what she has in store for us in the coming show.
How many shows have you been involved with?
All of them so this one with be my fifth show.
How long does a TRS project generally take for you?
It depends on the character. Getting a good likeness is one of the goals I like to focus on and some are much harder than others. So from start to finish, three weeks to three to four months.
What's the hardest/best thing about participating?
The hardest is being satisfied enough with my work to say the doll is finished. The Repaint Society is such a talented group so I set my standards high thus always worrying how the other artists will like what I have done. It's also the best thing about participating. I'm always motivated to push myself harder on each project. Motivation is not always easy to come by but this group motivates all of us. Seeing it (the motivation) in myself and the other artists is one of my favorite things about the group.
What's your personal favorite TRS achievement?
Han Solo was one of those dolls that took about four months to get a good likeness. To date, that face has taken the longest to finish (and I love Harrison Ford) so I would have to pick that doll.
What's the most expensive element you've incorporated?
The single most expensive would have to be the doll I used for Han Solo (Tonner's LOTR Strider).
What excites you most about this show?
I've always done celebrity likenesses on most all my dolls and I love it. So changing it up this time and doing an original face is a nice change of pace. I also am excited about creating extra "things" for Alice. Not to mention what all the other artists will come up with for their dolls! I can see some really creative things happening with this show.
Why did you pick your character?
I have always loved the Alice in Wonderland story. I love the craziness about it, very unique, very odd...that's totally me, lol. Having the opportunity to create all the weird stuff to go with her pushes me to think outside the box and think more creatively...a push I welcome!
How did you decide your concept?
I love the steampunk style and I don't thing it's too much of a reach to make it work for her. The rabbit is already known for the watch he carries.
What will be your greatest challenge in creating her?
The greatest challenge will be creating the cool steampunk characters/accessories to go with her but that will also be the most fun!
