And bringing in our last interview is the very talented Lisa Gates of Dazzle'Em Repaints who, while having been a longtime member of The Repaint Society, is taking part in her first show!
So this is your first show?
This is my first! I started to participate in a couple but due to some personal situations, I had to withdraw. I was so sad about that as I was really looking forward to working on the projects and being involved.
How long does a project generally take for you?
This wildly varies. It depends on so many factors and I know as I start costuming that it will take much longer. I can spend weeks planning for a doll and then many weeks working on her.
What's the best thing about participating?
The best thing is getting to see everyone's progress and watching each
other's creativity blossom. It is amazing to watch and see what is
being created. I do find it highly motivating and it's wonderful to
have people to bounce ideas off of instead of just hounding family
members.
What's your favorite personal achievement?
I do love to create fantasy repaints with intricate facial designs. I
enjoyed creating an octopus necklace and headpiece for a sea witch
named Sirenita.
What's the most expensive element you've incorporated?
The most expensive element would probably be related to jewelry that I
have made for a doll. I'm sure this will change as I am now starting
to work on costuming.
What excites you most about this show?
It is wonderful to see a group of artists participate together,
encourage each other, and create new story lines for characters that
people have loved for ages. I'm looking forward to seeing how the
characters were changed, where they are sent, and who they will
become.
Why did you pick your character?
Jasmine is a personal favorite and so when she was available for
selection, I was thrilled. I have so many ideas for her and journeys
that I could send her on. She is a strong character that I will be
able to enjoy working on as she has a complex personality. She's very
regal and independent.
How did you decide your concept?
I had so many directions I wanted to go with her and so I did consult
with a couple of artists and my daughter. Jafar was such an important
character that I felt he really needed to be represented and could
bring an element to my character that I wanted to develop.
What will be your greatest challenge in creating her?
This will certainly be costuming! I have not made many costumes myself
and so this is very challenging to me. I am so excited to work on the
whole project!
